Management and Team Training by Sailing
In this powerful and effective concept of learning, your team will run a sailing ship during one
or more days. The ship is a metaphor of an organization: define a goal, formulate a strategy,
divide the tasks, lead a team and cooperate to achieve results.
Your team will sail the ship and during time-outs the management trainers invite you to reflect on your way of working and they will give feedback.
What are the results?
Since the processes on board are similar to these in your company, your team will learn in reality; learning by doing. Through feedback and reflection, they will become aware of their style of leadership and their way of working in a team. We invite the participants to experiment with new ways of working, to become a more effective leader or a more effective team.

How do we work?
We work with custom-made programmes. The programme should be tailored to concentrate on the needs of the team and the organization, to meet its business objectives.
We use a traditional Dutch sailing ship (Lemmer Aak); stable and comfortable, 42-48 feet long, for 10 persons.
In Northern Greece we sail with 40-50 feet yachts in the Khalkidhiki region. For the participants sailing experience is not necessary.
Who are we?
We are Peter Oomens and Sjoerd Oppewal. Senior consultants/trainers of Oppewal Management Consultants, based in the Netherlands and in Bulgaria. We have been giving training by sailing since 1998, for more than fifty teams.
Our clients are business and public organizations. For twenty years we have been building up experience in organizational and team development.
We work in the Netherlands and in Eastern European and Asian countries.
We believe that people learn best through hands-on participation in a challenging environment.
The best way to learn is 'real life learning'; reflection on own behaviour and feedback from all team members, which creates awareness, followed by experimenting with new ways of doing.
We use the sailing ship to create realistic and challenging activities that bring the theoretical
concepts of leadership and teamwork alive. We build up an open, supportive atmosphere, in which
leaders and team members can take risks, learn and develop their attitude and skills, that support
their personal growth and their company's goals.
